Jurisdictional Changes Occurred During 2001-2011

For administrative purposes, the Deputy Commissioner is the administrative head of the district. He is responsible for general administration and maintenance of law and order. He is assisted by one additional Deputy Commissioner and other District Officers. For administrative convenience the district has been divided into sub-divisions and each sub-division is headed by Sub-divisional Officer (Civil). Each Tehsil is under the charge of Tehsildar, while the incharge of sub-Tehsil is Naib-Tehsildar assisted by office Kanungo.

Besides this, Block Development Officer is posted in each community development block to supervise and co-ordinate the development works assigned to Gram Panchayats in rural areas.

The head of the district police force is the Superintendent of Police, assisted by Additional S.P. and one Deputy Superintendent of Police. Each Police Station is headed by S.H.O. Every department maintains its district office to implement the schemes pertaining to it.

Urban Local Bodies

The statutory Urban Local Bodies are Cantonment Board, Municipal Corporation, Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat. The Urban Local Bodies elect a corporator from each of the Ward and his term is 5 years.

The President of the Municipal Council/Nagar Panchayat or the Mayor of the Municipal Corporation and his Deputy are elected by the voters of the concerned areas. Although for day-to-day administration the executive officer/secretary is responsible in a Municipal council/Nagar Panchayat, he works under the guidance of the President of the council. In corporation, an I.A.S. or a senior H.A.S. officer is deputed by the State Government as Municipal Commissioner who is responsible for day-to-day administration and development works.
